Hokkaido Declares “State of Emergency” Over Corona Virus Pandemic
Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan, has declared “State of Emergency” of a new type of corona virus, Covid-19, Friday (28/2). Peoples are asked to remain at home for the weekend.
“Hokkaido has done everything to control the Corona virus, but the crisis is deepening,” Hokkaido Governor Naomichi Suzuki said.
According to him, the state of emergency will last until March 19. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has called for all schools to be closed to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
The policy has drawn a lot of criticism from the public. At least one prefecture and several cities have refused to carry out the order. Under intense questions in parliament, Abe signaled his willingness to take a softer approach.
He said, closing schools nationally was only the basic thinking of the government. Abe said local governments and schools must make decisions flexibly.
There are 200 cases of Covid-19 infection in Japan. Five of them have died. The number does not include more than 700 people who are confirmed to have contracted Covid-19 on the Diamond Princess. The ship has been quarantined at the Port of Yokohama since 5 February. Five passengers died during quarantine.
