If you’re in to Asia travel you should definitely read this; Traveling in Asia is cheaper than traveling in Europe (obviously depending on your travel style). Yet there are always places that are slightly cheaper than others.
For the budget travelers, we’ve made a Top 5 with fun and inexpensive places to travel. There might be cheaper options, there might be better ways to save money but these are 5 places we really enjoyed while we didn’t spend that much!
The Philippines is relatively ‘unknown’ to the international travel industry. Many travelers we met stick to the mainland of Southeast Asia. This may be because most people have the idea of the Philippines as unsafe and expensive. We found out that both of that opinions are not entirely true. Although the country is visited more often nowadays prices are still low.
Even in places like Boracay (which is known for years), the prices are below average if you’re willing to look for it. Don’t expect Boracay to be a desolate island with unspoiled beaches since it’s becoming more and more touristy but brace yourself for some scenic areas. For budget accommodation you’ll pay no more then $10 – $20.
Chiang Mai, Thailand
Bangkok may be known as cheap and cheerful (which is true!). But the north of Thailand definitely meets the requirements of the budget travelers! Accommodation in Chiang Mai is cheap, inexpensive tours and activities are plentiful, the (night) market is a paradise for budget shoppers and drinks in a bar will cost you no more than a few dollars. And all that in a city that is located in a beautiful environment. An absolute must if you’re in to Asia travel.
Sihanoukville doesn’t have the best beaches you’ll find in Asia but we had a great time here. If you are looking for sun, beach and fun and affordable places to stay than Sihanoukville is the place to be. You can hang out on the beach all day, eat and drink at Food stalls and only spent a few dollars.
Many accommodation offer budget rooms and trips to nearby islands for around $20-$30. Or you can learn windsurfing or 4×4 tours without having to plunder your credit card. Again, there are more beautiful places in Asia but Sihanoukville is cheap and lots of fun!
We had the time of our life in Vietnam. It’s such a beautiful country with the nicest people (although we hear different stories from other Asia travelers). One of the best sights in Vietnam is Hanoi. Our favorite city in Asia. The city has it all, cheap but good accommodation, delicious food, enough highlights to spent a couple of days and of course the famous Bia Hoi or Hoi Bia where you most likely find the cheapest beer in Asia.
You can explore almost everything in Hanoi by foot (which saves some money on transport) and together with Ho Chi Minh it’s the main gateway to the rest of Vietnam (especially Halong Bay and Sapa).
This is no secret, we know. But if you’re not really in to the long term Asia travel but you like to go to Asia you might consider spending a week or 2 in Bali. You can easily find budget accommodation where you pay no more then $10 per night. And the island isn’t that big which makes it perfect for those who are staying no more then 2 weeks. If you have the option try to avoid high season as prices may go up then (especially near the beaches).
