The Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center is located on the west side of Clear Lake, 25 miles south-east of Houston. It is the monitoring center for all of NASA’s manned flights – the well-known Mission Control.

Those visiting the Johnson Space Center will find much of interest in the Visitor Orientation Center. There are film shows, astronaut’s rations, models of space capsules, some objects from the Gemini, Mercury and Apollo manned space programs, and even some samples of moon rock.

For those who enjoy a more hands on experience, you can try on the helmets that astronauts wear, and try their hand in steering a spacecraft in a simulator. Visitors can see huge space rockets and might even bump into a real astronaut.

The Space Center is open from 10:00 to 17:00 on weekdays, and from 10:00 to 19:00 on weekends. In the summer, and on various holidays, the opening hours are extended. The Space Center is closed on Christmas Day.

There are group rates when booking for 15 or more people. There are special membership offers which allow free admission for a whole year, family memberships and other specials. There is pay parking available.

For those space enthusiasts seeking that extra something, there is the Level 9 Tour available. This tour takes visitors behind the scenes, with a hot lunch included in the price in the same place the astronauts eat in everyday. You will get a much closer look at what astronauts do, what they see, and what they eat. There is a space simulation lab, a Neutral Buoyancy Lab that can be observed and more. Those wishing to join the Level 9 Tour need to be at least 14 years of age, and must book in advance since only 12 places are available for this tour each day. The Level 9 Tour begins at 11:45 promptly.

Houston Space Center is owned and operated by the Manned Space Flight Education Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational foundation offering extensive science education programs and a space museum. Space Center Houston is a leading science and space exploration learning center.
