Bahia Benedictine monks founded the São Bento Monastery, in 1590. Much of the historical building, which is located on the hills above São Bento has remained structurally intact since its construction between 1617-1641.
The exterior of this main building is simple and reflects the time it was constructed. It does not hint at the lavish interior of the Baroque gilded Baroque.
Frei Domingos de Conceicao (1643-1718) carved many of the works displayed. They also include the main altar in the church of the monastery. It is dedicated to Nossa Senhora, the Black Virgin, and features a painting that was done on it.
Mosteiro de São Bento remains a functioning monastery. The Benedictine monks protect the monastery and their work. They have worked hard to prevent the church becoming a tourist attraction.
Many areas, including the beautiful Cloisters, are out of bounds except for special occasions. Mass is offered daily to the public, with a full Gregorian chant on Sundays at 10 am. If you wish to see the interior of the monastery, visitors should dress appropriately.
